2016 Finalist Robert McGinnis followed through on his idea, with the help of Soldotna Rotary & Blazy Construction, and built a Recycling Event trailer. The trailer was operated for a summer at Peninsula events & festivals collecting and separating recyclables.
Robert explains: “CFK made me more independent in my life by giving me a chance to maybe go to college.
I came up with a trailer and I realized that I can’t just bring it to people’s houses, so I asked different events if I could possibly bring a trailer so I can recycle there.
I think everybody should be involved, because their ideas are important. Even if they can’t explain it very well, they can get the point across to different people with Caring For the Kenai.”

By participating in Caring for the Kenai -now known as Caring for My Back Yard – Robert had a door opened that may have never opened. It was the door that lead to self confidence. Prior to this competition he didn’t think going to college would work for him. He struggles with Dyslexia and prior to this is undermined his self-confidence. As his mother I can’t thank you enough. This changed his world. He’s about to graduate with a 3.33 GPA and has a college plan and a great career path in front of him.
Awesome job Robert
